STEVE SMITH WILL TAKE HIS ABILITIES TO THE TOP AND BEGIN AUSTRALIA'S BATTING IN THE FIRST TEST AGAINST WEST INDIES

Steve Smith will take his abilities to the top

Smith stated that opponents' previous methods against him will now risk scuffing the new ball by landing it halfway down the pitch.

If the previous Test against Pakistan was all about David Warner's impending retirement, the series opener against the West Indies revolves around newly promoted opener Steve Smith.

And Smith, true to his technical and analytical nature, has challenged the Caribbean attack to waste the new ball by bowling short-pitched deliveries to him.

Smith was promoted from No. 4 to open with Usman Khawaja after he offered his services. When Australia bats first in the first of two Tests that begin on Wednesday at Adelaide Oval, they will combine first.

The strategies opponents have used to hurt him in the past, according to Smith, run the danger of contaminating the new ball if it lands halfway down the field.

In the role, he hopes to score more easily and capitalize on attacking fields and lengths, much like Warner did during his 112-Test career, which came to an end last week at the Sydney Cricket Ground with a 3-0 Australia thumping of Pakistan.

Smith told the Australian Associated Press, "It's pretty game, I suppose, with a brand-new ball; bowling short stuff and wasting it." "I believe that when you're facing the new ball and there's a little bit more attacking going on, it definitely helps the scoring rate.
