Bengal minister Sujit Bose's Kolkata
home is raided by the ED
This occurs
in the midst of the central agency's continuing investigation into the
purported recruiting scam in West Bengal state-run schools.
In relation
to the suspected civic body recruitment scam, the Enforcement Directorate (ED)
is conducting raids at the West Bengal minister's and Trinamool Congress
politician Sujit Bose's residence in Kolkata, the state capital. This comes as
the central agency continues its investigation into the purported recruitment
scam at West Bengal's state-run schools by conducting search and seizure
operations in several areas of Kolkata and its surrounding areas.
Among other
prominent TMC politicians, houses of party spokesperson Tapas Roy and former
North Dum Dum Municipality chairman Subodh Chakraborty are also being searched
by the central agency.
In an
attempt to look into the school recruitment scam case, the investigation agency
conducted simultaneous searches at nine different locations in the city on
December 28 of last year. Raids were conducted on various people's homes and
offices in the Burrabazar, Kakurgachi, and EM Bypass areas of the capital city.
The Central
Bureau of Investigation (CBI) called the state's minister of fire and emergency
services last year over suspected irregularities in hiring in the state's
municipalities.
Bose
asserted, meanwhile, that he never got a summons from the CBI and promised, in
a news conference, to appear before the investigation team if he did. He also
claimed that he was the target of a political plot.
The Bengali
minister had previously served as vice-chairman of the South Dum Dum
Municipality from 2010 to 2021, during which time some 250 individuals were
purportedly hired by the civic organization in an unethical way.
The Calcutta
High Court had previously been informed by the CBI and ED of a connection
between the West Bengal school recruitment fraud and the cases pertaining to
civic body recruitment scams.
